artist statement
I resist being categorised as a topographical landscape artist and intentionally create images which are not exact representations of experiences and places seen, but rather suggest them. By exploiting magical painting processes, I’m provided with enough space to muse and hypothesise, for the viewer to do likewise and perhaps even recognise. Masterful inspirations are the late works of Lloyd Rees, Sidney Nolan and JMW Turner, their sight miraculously manifest atmospheric landscapes wherein the experience of being in a landscape is master over the literal depiction of a scene or view.
My sculptures are created in a similar way to the paintings in that during the working process, memories are triggered, grabbed and made concrete. As in the paintings, what is going on is of greater significance than any literal surface likeness.”
